Victorian 18k Gold Garnet SNAKE Clasp w 9k Rolo Chain Necklace

For sale is an antique necklace with an 18k yellow gold antique garnet snake clasp and a 9k rolo chain.  The snake clasp was originally attached to a memento mori human hair braid, which we replaced with this beautiful antique rolo chain.  This amazing snake clasp was crafted during the Egyptian revival period in the early 1800's, when Europeans and Americans became obsessed with all things from "the Orient." 

The snake clasp is hollow and sturdy.  The clasp fastens with a tongue in groove closure.  The "tongue" on the side of the snake's tail fits perfectly into the "groove" on the side of her head.  The snake has rose cut garnet eyes. The necklace is made from a wide rolo chain.  This necklace is absolutely stunning.  It looks fabulous at the neckline, and can be combined with other antique chains and pendants for a layered look.
