This wonderfully colorful Mexican boulder opal pendant has all the character we love in old pawn jewelry—a fabulous natural stone, hand-crafted silver, and a design with plenty of history.

At the center is a glowing oval Mexican boulder opal, alive with flashes of fiery orange, red, yellow, and electric green. The natural matrix remains visible within the stone, creating wonderful variations in color and texture. The silver setting has a classic squash blossom-inspired design, with the opal surrounded by six dimensional, hand-worked petals. The aged silver and natural patina give the piece exactly the rustic, well-loved character we look for in vintage Southwestern and old pawn jewelry.

Mexican boulder opal was once much more readily available and became a popular souvenir for American travelers to Mexico during the 20th century. Vintage examples like this capture a wonderful moment in the history of Mexican and Southwestern jewelry, and the older pieces are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
