14k Gold Intaglio Ring w Androcles + the LION. Compassion

For sale is a 14k yellow gold intaglio ring carved to tell the story of Androcles and the Lion.  According to the legend, Androcles removed a thorn from the lion's paw, and the lion rewards Androcles' bravery and compassion with friendship.  The intaglio is beautifully carved on a large flat oval of vibrant blue-green glass.  The image shows the massive, powerful lion holding out his paw, allowing Androcles to remove the thorn on his raised knee.  The lion has a halo of rays engraved like a starburst above his head, symbolizing his pain and fear.  Both figures are clearly detailed and recognizable on the face of the ring.  The intaglio is bezel set and framed in a band of gold with a twisted rope design.  The ring has a lightweight, square band that is polished smooth.  This is a vibrant ring with the most attractive, appealing image I have ever seen on an intaglio!  How wonderful to wear a ring celebrating compassion and friendship!

According to the Greek legend, Androcles was a runaway slave of a former Roman consul in Africa. Androcles takes shelter in a cave, which turns out to be the den of a wounded lion.  In compassion, Androcles removes a large thorn from the Lion's paw. In gratitude, the lion becomes tame towards Androcles and henceforward shares his catch with the slave.
