9k Gold "I Cling to Thee" Victorian Mourning Pendant. 1.5"

For sale is a 9k yellow gold Victorian mourning pendant. Part of the Sea Green Mermaid Reimagined Vintage Collection, we had our jeweler transform an antique brooch into this pendant so it could be worn and enjoyed. The pendant is a large flat oval with round beads framing the outer edge. The gold has a rosy hue. The pendant has a large bail to accommodate your chain.

This brooch has many symbols of mourning that would have been recognized during the Victorian era. The pendant features a curving ribbon or banner in raised gold.  The banner runs from the top to the bottom of the pendant and reads "I Cling to Thee" in elegant script. Twin vines of ivy frame the banner in raised gold. During the Victorian era, The evergreen leaves of the ivy represent immortality. Tombstones and mausoleums frequently feature depictions of ivy to symbolize the afterlife and immortal nature of the human soul.

The winding banner twists around a raised gold arrow pointing earth-wards. The arrow signifies that the wearer clings to the memory of a person who has passed away (i.e. lies below).

This pendant is simply stunning! A large, beautifully crafted antique that conveys a message of powerful love and deeply felt loss.

The item shows normal wear for a pre-owned piece (light scratches, dings, dents and scuff marks.)
