18k Gold Columbian Emerald Aztec 3 GODS Pendant Necklace *RARE*
18k Gold Columbian Emerald Aztec 3 GODS Pendant Necklace *RARE*
** Note: The pendant on the left with 2 feathers on his head depicts The Aztec Hummingbird god, named Huitzilopochtli. This god is associated with warfare and human sacrifice. Most human sacrifices were specifically meant for him because Aztecs believed that if Huitzilopochtli was defeated, the Aztecs would also suffer defeat. The Sacrifices were a means to strengthen the god’s powers.
The middle pendant depicts the "Feathered Serpent God," revered also in Aztec culture as the god Quetacoatl. The god has feathered arms (wings) and the curving tail of a snake. This god is a mix of god and human - godlike because he can fly, and human because he must crawl the earth like a serpent.
The pendant on the right with square arms and legs is Tlaltecuhtli, known as the "earth monster." His dismembered body was the basis for the world in the Aztec creation story of the final cosmos. In carvings, Tlaltecuhtli is often depicted as an anthropomorphic being with splayed arms and legs. Considered the source of all living things, he had to be kept sated by human sacrifices which would ensure the continued order of the world.
