Welcome to Sea Green Mermaid!

For sale is a 14k yellow gold earrings with Ethiopian black Welo opals.  These are hydrophane opals, and were mined in the Wollo opal fields in Ethiopia.  The opals have a dark gray base color and flash with vivid cherry red, neon green, orange and yellow fire.  The opals are small ovals and dangle from leverbacks.  The leverbacks fasten securely.  These opals will swing and catch the light, flashing their vibrant opalescent color as you wear them.

The most important opal discovery in Ethiopia to date was made in 2008 near the town of Wegel Tena in the Wollo Province in the northern part of the country. This opal can have vivid play-of-color flashing from a body color of clear, white, yellow, orange, or brown. It is more stable than the North Shewa opal. This material quickly became known in the trade as “welo opal,” but the names “wollo” and “wello” are also encountered.

The item shows normal wear for a pre-owned piece (light scratches, dings, dents and scuff marks.)
