14k Yellow Gold Diamond BUBBLES Ring. MCM 50s Modernist

This stunning Mid-Century Modern diamond ring has a fabulous Atomic Age design that reminds us of Sputnik, starbursts, and the exuberant futuristic jewelry of the 1950s and 60s.

The sculptural top is formed from a playful arrangement of 14k yellow gold tubes in varying lengths, each seeming to shoot upward from the finger at a different angle. Six of the tubes terminate in sparkling round brilliant diamonds, each securely bezel set. A seventh tube ends simply in a polished round of gold—a wonderful asymmetrical detail that adds to the ring's quirky modernist character.

The diamonds are bright, sparkly, and eye-clean, with inclusions visible under magnification. Because the tubes rise to different heights, the ring has a deliberately high profile and looks interesting from virtually every angle. This is a ring meant to be noticed.

Even the band is unusual. Rather than being perfectly round, it has a European-style squared-round shape, while both sides of the back have a scalloped edge that continues the geometric rhythm of the design.

The gold shows dings, scuffs, and scratches consistent with age and wear, particularly visible in our magnified photographs. We think those signs of life suit the vintage character of this wonderfully unusual piece.
